Despite the enormous popularity of his music, Joplin died impoverished at the Manhattan Psychiatric Center in 1917 and was buried in an unmarked grave in Queens. The drawings are playful, the colors glorious, the text almost poetic, and the history is reasonably accurate. Though far beyond the publisher’s target age group of 48, I am thoroughly enchanted by this book about Scott Joplin. The event will include concerts by ECU students and faculty throughout the day.
